AI dungeon master tools in 2026: assistants vs games that GM for you
“AI dungeon master” means two different things. One is a game where the AI runs the session while you play. The other is a human DM with an AI assistant on the side. QuestMaster is the second kind, so if what you want is Franz running your campaign, this page will point you elsewhere rather than pretend otherwise.
Product claims were checked on 2026-09-18 against fables.gg, aidungeon.com, questportal.com, Foundry’s AI Content Policy, roll20.net, dndbeyond.com, and QuestMaster’s own pricing and API key pages.
Two different products
| The AI runs the game | You run the game | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is the DM | The model | A human. The model drafts, you approve. |
| The promise | Play right now, no scheduling, a GM who is always available | Prep faster, and still sit behind the screen |
| Where it breaks | The story is the model’s, and you are a player in it | You still have to show up and make the calls |
| Examples on 2026-09-18 | Friends & Fables (Franz), AI Dungeon | QuestMaster, with an optional key. Quest Portal’s “AI game master” assistant sits closer to help-for-the-GM than to a replacement, going by its own homepage. |
Friends & Fables on 2026-09-18
The live site is fables.gg, titled “Friends & Fables | DnD inspired text RPG powered by AI.” (friendsandfables.com did not resolve on 2026-09-18, and fables.ai is a domain for sale, not the product.)
In the homepage’s own words, it offers:
- Campaigns “run by our AI Game Master”
- Franz, “your AI Game Master,” who narrates, adjudicates rules, and reacts in real time
- Tactical turn-based combat based on D&D 5e rules, with battlemaps, spells and monsters
- Worldbuilding tools, maps, image generation, and text to speech
- Multiplayer parties of up to six
- “Beautifully Integrated and AI Native”
- “Adventure Anytime, Anywhere,” with no scheduling conflicts
That is a coherent product with a clear idea of what it is. It is not a VTT with an assistant attached; it is an AI GM with a table attached. QuestMaster is not trying to out-Franz Franz, and would not be good at it.
Its pricing page on 2026-09-18 listed four tiers, billed monthly: Free at $0 (up to 25 turns a day, campaigns of 3 players), Starter at $19.95, Pro at $29.95, and Legend at $39.95 a month, with the party size rising from 3 to 6 as you go up. The paid tiers remove the daily turn limit and add text to speech. Note that these are per-GM prices for the AI to run the game; the party plays for free.
AI Dungeon on 2026-09-18
aidungeon.com presents itself as “AI Dungeon | Free AI Text Adventure Game.” You create open-ended stories and steer them by typing. Its guidebook covers models, memberships and story modes, and has no section on virtual tabletops.
It is a text adventure, and a good one. It is not a virtual tabletop, and QuestMaster is not “AI Dungeon with maps.”
Quest Portal’s assistant
Quest Portal (2026-09-18) markets “Assistant: Your AI game master,” with instant lore and rule clarity, NPC and encounter help, character sheets, and a VTT-style feature list (voice chat, scenes, maps) on the same site.
The fairest description is a GM assistant plus tabletop platform. It is worth knowing about because it means QuestMaster is not the only product that will talk through rules with you. If a rules-lookup row matters to your decision, the comparison on /pricing has one, with a date on it.
Traditional VTTs and AI
Foundry. Its AI Content Policy, revised 18 March 2026, sets rules for generative AI in packages on the official listing and marketplace. Human-made work is the priority and “Zero AI” is offered as a package tag. That is a policy for add-ons, not a built-in DM assistant. Community modules can add AI features, and a module is what they are.
Roll20. The homepage on 2026-09-18 describes a browser VTT with Dynamic Lighting and character sheets, and does not mention generative AI.
D&D Beyond. The homepage on 2026-09-18 describes the official toolset with Maps VTT, a mobile app and the Avrae bot, and does not mention generative AI either.
If what you want is a traditional VTT with no AI in it, all three are still there. QuestMaster can be that too: leave the key out, and per billing the AI is free on every plan and never required.
QuestMaster’s rule
QuestMaster is a 5e VTT and campaign toolkit. Its AI is optional, runs on your Gemini, OpenAI or Anthropic key, and carries no markup. The setup tutorial is at /help/api-keys and the practice guide is Run D&D with your own AI key. The rule, stated on the homepage, is simple: you are the DM, and the AI is only ever the assistant.
In practice that looks like this:
- You generate an NPC, an item, a map or a recap, then approve it or throw it away.
- You can skip AI entirely, and the map, tracker, sheets and world tools all work the same.
- The session is never handed to the model. If that is the experience you were looking for, Friends & Fables is the better fit, and there is no shame in saying so.

Which to pick
- You want to play and not GM. Friends & Fables or AI Dungeon. Pick Friends & Fables for 5e-style combat with a party of friends, and AI Dungeon for a solo text adventure.
- You want to GM, and you already keep ChatGPT open in another tab. You do not need an AI GM. You need that tab inside the campaign, on your own key, with an approve-or-discard step in front of it. That is QuestMaster: start free, then follow the key tutorial.
- You want to GM and want nothing to do with AI. Roll20, Foundry, D&D Beyond Maps, or QuestMaster with no key. All four are honest choices; optional means optional.
