Connect an AI assistant
Your AI assistant can work inside your campaigns: it reads what’s there and drafts prep for you, from NPCs and factions to sessions, fights, items, map notes and table screens. Nothing changes until you approve it, and the game itself stays yours: the assistant never starts fights, pushes secrets or fires cues.
Before you connect
- AI features need to be on for your account (Account ▸ Preferences).
- Choosing a campaign when you connect turns on its AI agent access. You can turn it off any time in that campaign’s Settings ▸ AI agent access; off means no connected app can read or change anything there.
- When you connect, QuestMaster asks which campaigns the assistant may open, whether it may draft changes or only read, and which tools it gets (story, rules, encounters, content, maps). Drafting changes is on Adept and higher plans; on Apprentice an assistant can read your campaigns. You can change or revoke any connection on Account ▸ Connections.
Claude
The QuestMaster VTT plugin is the best way in: it connects your account and teaches Claude how to prep well, with workflows, 12 genre packs and 6 writing styles.
On claude.ai (web, desktop, mobile): open Customize ▸ Plugins ▸ Add marketplace, paste https://github.com/ascendedent/questmaster-vtt-plugin, add QuestMaster VTT, then connect it and sign in to QuestMaster when asked.
In Claude Code:
/plugin marketplace add ascendedent/questmaster-vtt-plugin
/plugin install questmaster-vtt@questmaster-vttThen run /mcp, choose questmaster-vtt and sign in.
Just the connection, without the plugin: in Claude’s settings add a custom connector with the URL https://questmastervtt.com/api/mcp and sign in to QuestMaster.
ChatGPT
In ChatGPT’s settings, turn on developer mode for apps and connectors, create a connector with the URL https://questmastervtt.com/api/mcp/full, and sign in to QuestMaster when asked. ChatGPT reads QuestMaster’s guide for assistants on its own, so it follows the same workflows the Claude plugin teaches. Menu names change between ChatGPT releases: look for Connectors.
Grok
Add QuestMaster as a custom connector on grok.com, then load the kit into a Project.
- On grok.com, open Connectors and choose New Connector ▸ Custom (on Grok Business, an admin adds it first).
- Enter the URL https://questmastervtt.com/api/mcp/full and name it QuestMaster VTT.
- Sign in to QuestMaster when asked and choose the campaigns it may open.
In Grok Build (the CLI), install the plugin instead, then sign in when it first connects:
grok plugin marketplace add ascendedent/questmaster-vtt-plugin
grok plugin install questmaster-vtt@questmaster-vtt-plugin --trustThen, if you like, give it QuestMaster’s prep guidance: download the QuestMaster kit for Grok on Account ▸ Connections and follow its README:
- Create a Project for your campaign.
- Paste instructions.md into the Project's instructions.
- Add the four files in knowledge/ to the Project.
- In the Project's chats, turn on the QuestMaster VTT connector.
- If your plan has Grok's Skills tab, you can import the skills in skills/ there instead, starting with questmaster-vtt.
Without the kit, Grok still reads the same guidance from QuestMaster once it is connected. Menu names change between releases.
Gemini
Add QuestMaster as a custom app in the Gemini app, then upload its skills.
- On gemini.google.com, open Settings ▸ Connected Apps and, under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app. It needs a personal Google account in the US, age 18 or over, with Keep Activity on.
- Enter the URL https://questmastervtt.com/api/mcp/full and choose Next.
- Sign in to QuestMaster when asked and choose the campaigns it may open. In a chat, type @ and pick QuestMaster VTT.
Then, if you like, give it QuestMaster’s prep guidance: download the QuestMaster kit for Gemini on Account ▸ Connections and follow its README:
- On the web, open Settings ▸ Skills ▸ Upload.
- Upload the questmaster-vtt folder from skills/ first: it is the core one.
- Upload any other skills you want (one folder each): the workflows, genre packs and writing styles.
- In a chat, type / to pick a skill or let Gemini choose, and @ for QuestMaster VTT.
Without the kit, Gemini still reads the same guidance from QuestMaster once it is connected. Menu names change between releases.
Cursor, VS Code, Codex and other tools
Coding tools connect with a personal token instead of signing in. On Account ▸ Connections, create a connection: QuestMaster shows the token once, with the exact setup line for Claude Code and a config block for Cursor, VS Code and similar tools. Treat the token like a password.
Approving what it drafts
- The assistant collects its changes into a draft, recaps them, and asks you. You approve on the Agent changes page in QuestMaster, where you can approve everything, only some of it, or discard it.
- Some apps can ask you right in the chat instead. You choose which connections may do that, on Account ▸ Connections.
- Anything you approve can be undone from the same page. If you have edited something since, it tells you and asks before putting it back.
Privacy
What the assistant reads from your campaign is sent to that AI company to answer you, under your account with them. QuestMaster sends only what the assistant asks for, from the campaigns you allowed. Rules-book content from expansions you own is shared only if you confirm, when connecting, that training on your data is off in that app. See the privacy policy.
